Update on H

Well it's going to be a long road to recovery, but the journey has begun.

H had 2 surgeries on Friday. She had surgery on her shattered ankle and on her right forearm. They were almost done with the surgery on her arm when they discovered a second break in her arm. So they had to take out the plates that they had just put in and replace them with larger ones. Her ankle and leg are casted but her arm isn't. There are stiches on the inside of her incision on her arm so that will heal from the inside out literally. About 1 1/2 hours after her surgery she was moved from ICU to IMCU (one step up from ICU) and was doing really good considering everything she's been through. On Sunday morning they moved her down to a normal room and took her chest tube out. She is finally off her Morphine IV and is just getting pain meds every 4 hours. She is still in a lot of pain and it's hard to hear and see her in so much pain. She does ask to be sat up in a chair but can only sit for about 30 minutes before she is crying and in too much pain to bear it any longer.

She can eat normal food, but doesn't have much of an appetite. She was begging for a grilled cheese on Sunday so they finally let her have it. You should've seen the smile on her face when the nurse brought it in. She ate half of it and fell asleep but it was really cute.

On Friday when I first saw her I started crying immediately. It was really bad. She was super swollen and you could just tell that she was in a lot of pain. She couldn't stay awake for more than a minute or two at a time because they wanted her to stay in a coma and the most she could say was I love you.

On Saturday she was a little more talkative and could talk in longer sentences. She could stay awake for about 15 minutes or so at a time and was no longer in an induced coma.

Sunday she could stay awake for about 30 minutes at a time and could almost carry on a conversation with you. She was asking about her accident and asking to see pictures. She was telling us what she remembered about that day. She remembers a good portion of what happened that day including falling asleep and then waking up and hitting a culvert. She can't remember if it was the first or second culvert but she does remember that much. She remembers that one of her friends found her and called 911 but she can't remember telling her friend her moms cell phone number. She was conscious when Abby found her but after that it's pretty much a blur.

Here is an update of everything that is broken: nose, C7 vertebrae, both collar bones, 2 ribs, pelvis, right forearm (2 places), left leg, and left ankle. She also lacerated her liver, and one of her lungs is punctured and collapsed. She is and always was breathing on her own which is a really good sign. She has also had a filter put in to prevent blood clots from getting to her heart.

She has been doing really good with everything. Right now it's just about pain control at this point. They do not have a projected date for her to come home yet but we are thinking about another week or two weeks. They are talking about moving her down to the rehab floor soon so she can start to learn how to walk and everything.
